What is Raising the Barre?

Raising the Barre is our community outreach program! It provides a great opportunity for students in grades 6-12 to help others while having fun, engaging in new experiences, and gaining valuable leadership skills. In addition, participating in Raising the Barre can help fulfill school community service requirements, and volunteer hours can be documented for college applications.

Raising the Barre meets approximately once per month, usually on Saturdays, with additional group meetings scheduled as needed. Students work together to plan and participate in various community service projects throughout the year! Students play an active role in each step of their projects, gaining leadership skills as they plan, connect with organizations, and complete their service projects.

Previous projects include:

  • Hosting a Dance-a-Thon, raising over $1000 for PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center

  • Working with Fleece for Keeps to make fleece blankets for children in foster care

  • Teaching dance workshops at Chester County Family Academy's summer camp

  • Hosting a toy drive for Toys for Tots

...and more!

Participation in Raising the Barre is free and open to all BDSOPA students in grades 6-12. To learn more, click below to to RSVP to our info session on Saturday, September 11th, at 12:30pm!

Faculty Feature: Ballet and Break Dance (and more!)

We are thrilled to welcome two phenomenal dance instructors to the BDSOPA Faculty! They each bring a wealth of knowledge and experience, and fortify our current styles while offering brand new styles and techniques for our BDSOPA students.

Rebecca Cupples (Ballet, Contemporary Jazz, and Lyrical) is a Philadelphia-based instructor and choreographer whose works have been performed on both coasts, on television, film, and onstage. She earned a BFA in dance from University of the Arts, and has helped students gain admission to Juilliard, Ailey/Fordham, University of the Arts, and Temple.

She will be teaching our Advanced Senior Ballet, Intermediate Junior Ballet, and Beginner Junior/Teen Ballet classes on Thursdays!

Yuki Ishiguro (Acro, Break Dance, Contemporary Jazz) has devoted his life to learning many forms of dance from their most authentic sources. After moving to New York from Japan, he studied contemporary dance with Dance New Amsterdam, break dance and street dancing from America's Got Talent Season 8 winner Kenichi Ebina, and earned certifications in Acrobatic Arts and Yoga. He has been featured on stage, television, and on tour for musicians. He will be teaching our Advanced Senior Contemporary Jazz, Junior Contemporary Jazz, Beginner Acro, and Break Dance classes on Thursdays!

Click below to enroll in one of their classes or see our full class schedule!

Bring a Friend to Dance Class!

We're extending our usual "Bring a Friend" month from September through November! Any week through the end of November, you're welcome to bring a friend to join a dance class for free.

Here's how it works:

  • Bring a friend to dance class! They'll get a FREE drop-in and you both receive a little surprise at the end of class OR

  • Spread the word and make sure your friend lets us know that you sent them.

  • When your friend registers, you'll both receive 50% off of one dance class for your friend's first month!

You can share this discount with as many friends as you like and stack your savings up to one month of class tuition. Dancers must be new to BDSOPA in order to be eligible for this referral program.
